The town council has received confirmation that Somerset Highways will go ahead with its proposed changes to the Library Junction. Included in the changes are removal of the traffic island, widening of the pavements to the north and south side of the High Street at the junction, and a new raised table at the eastern end of the High Street. There will also be some changes to road signs and markings. For a higher resolution pdf of the proposals please use this link.
The work is currently planned to take place from 17 July 2023 to 4 August 2023, and will result in significant disruption and full closure for at least some times during this period.
Some years ago, the town council brought forward its own proposals for improvements to the junction. These proposals were submitted to County Highways, who substantially modified the town council’s proposals. After some pushback Highways made what the town council considers to be improvements to their own proposals, and it is this second Highways version that is now to be constructed. The town council endorsed these plans at its meeting of 25 October 2022.
