At its recent meeting on 26 March 2024, the town council decided to pay for repairs for this bridge, which has been closed as unsafe for some time. Work has now started. The woodwork and decking is being completely replaced, as are the steel bracing strips underneath, which had started to corrode. The supporting girders are sound.
No-one has accepted ownership of the bridge or responsibility for its repair. The town council continues to believe that this responsibility rests, at least in part, with Somerset Council. Somerset Council disagrees. The town council will continue to make its case and seek a contribution to the cost, but a shut bridge and a local eyesore are not in anyone’s interests.
For a fuller record of the council discussion and the reasons for its decision please see the minutes of the meeting.
