One Planet Action Plan for Bruton 2025

Introduction

This plan has been drawn up by members of Bruton Town Council’s Climate and Ecological Emergency Working Group, following a community workshop held on 6 July 2024. It was adopted by Bruton Town Council on 29 April 2025.

It is organised using the One Planet principles. We have tried to keep it short and simple, with more detail in a separate appendix.

COMPETITION: we would love to have photos to include in the plan. If you’d like to submit a photo please email it to the town clerk by 30 June 2025. Photos will be judgedby our new Mayor James Buckland. The winners will be credited in the plan.

Our approach

The Town Council declared a Climate and Ecological Emergency in 2019. We continue to believe that as a council and community we need to take all the steps that we can to address the emergency we face, rather than waiting for or expecting others to take a lead.

Science has long been clear about most of the steps that need to be taken to reduce carbon emissions and protect our natural environment, and to adapt to a changing climate. These steps are set out in numerous different documents with broad consensus about most of them. We don’t need to repeat old debates. Instead, we should ‘follow the science’ and focus on actions that are known to have a significant impact if done at a local as well as a national level.

As a small community we have limited resources. We need people to come forward with energy and commitment, and we will only be able to do things that these people are prepared to champion and work on.
