Culture and community

Nurturing local identity and heritage, empowering communities and promoting a culture of sustainable living

Where do we need to be?

Everyone (including new arrivals) will feel welcome in the town and able to engage in its cultural and community life.

There continues to be a wide range of activities and initiatives with which people can become involved.

As far as is possible there are safe and attractive public spaces where people can meet and spend time.

Where are we now?

One Planet Bruton initiatives such as Hoedown are working well and model community participation by ‘just doing it’.

Good Company Bruton offers support to new community initiatives. It was founded in 2021 with the objective of ‘bringing people together’ and making altruism easy.

The Town Council:

  • Supports public events such as the Christmas Shopping night and on occasions the Packhorse Fair.
  • Uses a collective approach to address major issues facing the town (eg the closure and potential sale of Bruton School for Girls) by arranging and supporting public meetings.

People frequently report that ‘no-one told them’, or that they don’t know what’s going on.

Despite the Town Council’s support for a local youth service and its plans for a skatepark there are few safe spaces for young people (particularly girls) to meet and socialise.

What do we need to do?

The initiatives which are working well should continue.

Establish a communication strategy using a variety of channels to ensure that residents, including new arrivals, hear about what’s happening.

Create safe space for girls and young women.
