Zero waste

Reducing consumption, reusing and recycling to achieve zero waste and zero pollution

Where do we need to be?

Good progress in waste reduction needs to continue.

Where are we now?

In Somerset, in 2022-23, we recycled 56.4% of domestic waste (UK Average in 2021: 44.6%). 41.1% goes to energy from waste and 2.5% is landfilled.

9% of Somerset waste is food waste which is anaerobically digested to make green energy and soil improver for local farms.

Somerset Waste collects a wide number of different kinds of waste from homes but businesses have to make their own arrangements.

Several shops in Bruton offer refill options and neighbouring towns have refill shops.

There are active WhatsApp and Facebook groups to pass on unwanted stuff to save it being binned.

What do we need to do?

Continue to support and promote existing initiatives.

Research Bruton’s recycling and waste generation and publicise any data available.
