The planned upgrade to improve access through the Abbey Ponds site will be taking place during November, with a confirmed start date of 3rd November (weather permitting). Works at the Abbey Ponds site are expected to take 10 working days (weather dependent). As some of you may be aware, this site is listed as a Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM) and as such, it has been necessary to obtain consent from Historic England for this work to take place.
These improvements include an upgrade to the pathway along Abbey Ponds, a ramp replacing the steps and renewed gateways, followed by extending the pathway through the Durslade Community Gardens, creating an access friendly route for the community to enjoy.
The footpath will be closed (in between points A and B on the map) from 3rd November until 14th November. During this time, you can still walk via the Jubilee Park and Dovecote path across into Abbey Ponds (marked ‘Alternative Route’ on the map) or drive and use Hauser and Wirth Somerset’s car park for access to the allotments and Wild Shed Sauna.
The works will progress to the Durslade Community Gardens, starting on 17th November, and should be completed by 21st November. Information will be updated on the website news page as and when works progress.
A later phase of the project will include information and way-finding signage. The hope is to encourage the community to enjoy the natural beauty and learn some of the history of Abbey Ponds as well as providing a more accessible route for connection with the town.
Specific dates and further information will be updated on the website news page as and when works progress.
Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience during this time.
