Bruton Town Council officers met with a contractor September last year to agree and safely plan some necessary maintenance along the Hedge line bordering between Abbey Ponds and the field behind the Dovecote. This hedgerow required some attention in order to thicken and provide a natural barrier for livestock and to reduce the height. The contractor warned that it may look quite drastic on first cut, but it would ultimately improve this natural hedgerow.
Some of you may or may not be aware that this piece of land is categorised as SCHEDULED ANCIENT MONUMENT, which means there is legislation in place to protect it. As such, Bruton Town Council have a duty to follow specific guidance in authorising works to be carried out in this area and our officers have sought advice from Historic England. Officers met with the very experienced contractor onsite at that time and were satisfied that compliance and safety to the site was ensured. This work was planned to take place when weather permitted back in September 2024, however, weather did not permit and has instead taken place more recently.
