Red Heat Health Alert Issued for Somerset

Somerset is moving into a Red Heat Health Alert from the early hours of Wednesday through to Thursday evening (now extended to Friday 26 June 11pm), with significant and widespread impacts expected across the county. This is the highest level of heat alert and brings increased risks of dehydration, overheating, heat exhaustion and heatstroke, particularly for older people, young children and those with existing health conditions.

Residents are encouraged to:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Avoid outdoor activity during the hottest hours (11am–3pm).
  • Wear a hat, use sunscreen and seek shade when outside.
  • Keep homes cool by closing curtains and blinds.
  • Check on elderly neighbours, relatives and vulnerable community members.
  • Take extra care around rivers, lakes and other open water.

Community Support

Local churches, village halls and community centres that can remain cool may provide welcome relief during periods of extreme heat. Residents are encouraged to look out for one another and ensure vulnerable people have access to support and advice.
